On February 6-7, 2019, the Nuclear Security Center of Excellence (NSCOE) specialists have been conducting the Radiation Control Training to officils of SBGS Vilnius Border District The training consisted of two parts: theoretical (self-learning) and practical training. The first part was done on-line using e-learning training platform where participants studied the course materials themselves. The purpose of the first part of the training was to provide trainees with the basic background subject matter information in order to prepare them for the practical training part. After the completion of the e-learning every participant must pass on-line examination test which is a necessary pre-condition to proceed with the second part of the training.

During the second training part, NSCOE instructors lead the participants through the legal frameworks and valid procedures related to the radiation detection and control at the Border Crossing Points; presented to the participants the conditions of legitimate transportation of the radioactive materials and the samples of certificates for such cargos; explained the procedures and the requirements for issuance of licenses and temporary permissions for transportation and the requirements for legal possession and usage of the radioactive sources; provided guidance on the identification of the  normally occurred radioactive materials (NORM) and other things.

During the practical exercises participants continued to develop their practical skills and capabilities to utilize hand-held radiation detection equipment, to perform identification of the radionuclides and to document the data collected. Practicing to use  Central Alarm System software participants learned to interpret and assess the Radiation Portal Monitors alarm signals and finally, to take appropriate decision.
