On April 16–19, 2019 in Trencin (Slovakia) the United States Department of Energy, the National Nuclear Security Administration Office of Nuclear Smuggling Detection and Deterrence (NSDD) organized international Mobile Detection System (MDS) Corrective Maintenance Workshop.

The number of Lithuanian law enforcement institutions’ representatives participated in the workshop, including Žygimantas Kalpokas, the Chief Specialist of the Nuclear Security Center of Excellence (NSCOE) at the Border Control Management Board of the State Border Guard Service under the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania.

The purpose of this international workshop was to develop the skills and competence to work properly with MDS vans and associated equipment; quickly and flexibly diagnose and repair equipment failures, eliminate them for the detection to carry out missions effectively and uninterrupted for detection, identification, and interdiction of radioactive and special nuclear materials.

NSCOE has been actively cooperating with the NSDD since it’s establishment in 2012. The NSCOE currently owns and uses one MDS van for training purposes, as well as providing service assistance to other competent authorities.
