On 18 August 2020, while visiting the Lithuanian border with Belarus, Ambassador of the United States of America to Lithuania Robert S. Gilchrist also visited the units of the State Border Guard Service under the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Lithuania (SBGS): Border Guard School and the SBGS Nuclear Security Centre of excellence (NSCOE). At the Border Guard School, the guest was introduced to the border guard profession in detail, the training system and the infrastructure.

At the NSCOE the ambassador got acquainted with the objectives and functions of the centre. The main aspects of the NSCOE cooperation with respective e United States’ entities were discussed.

At the meeting, the Ambassador reassured United State’s support to the NSCOE activities in the area of combating the illicit trafficking and proliferation of the nuclear and radioactive substances as well as emergency preparedness to manage the nuclear and radiological incidents. Additionally, the NSCOE’s initiatives on developing regional nuclear security cooperation with Latvia and Estonia were discussed.

Established in 2012, the NSCOE provides specialized training for law enforcement personnel, manages nuclear security detection infrastructure and technical equipment maintenance of, promotes nuclear security culture within its stakeholder organisations.
